A Few Helpful Hints
BALANCE: (Does the size and style seem comfortable together?)
SCALE: (appropriateness of size to similar objects)
TEXTURE: (creates tactile interest as well as visual)
COLOR: (provides a calm (cool colors) - or energized (warm colors) feeling)
THEME: (tell a story)
AESTHETIC: (Does it look good??)
"The little black dress" analogy: (A room is like a beautiful plain black dress.
It is the jewelry and other accessories that make it -and you- look great!)
Less is more (don't overdo just because you have "stuff")
Collection = 3 or more similar items. Display them together.
Place groupings together by odd numbers (usually).
Full view items (ie: vase) - looks good from any angle.
One-side view item (ie: picture frame) - the back is not meant to be seen.
The "wow factor" should happen at the doorway.
Fabric is an important element in accessorizing a room - color and soft texture.
Round out the corner of a room with a floor plant. It brings "the outside inside".
A room has a personality and should reflect the lifestyle and interests of the family.
An "Inspiration piece" is anything as simple as a seashell to as big and elaborate as a full
scale tapestry. It is your starting point.
When adding accessories to a room: If you have children, think like a child, if you have
a dog, think like a wagging tail.
